5 Design Tips To Create A Modern Farmhouse Interior

With its natural textures, rustic finishes and monochrome colour palette, modern farmhouse is potentially one of our most favourite styles of interior design. Although we see much more of it over in the US, this chic style of design is becoming much more widely embraced throughout the UK.

Today we wanted to share 5 essential design tips to create a modern farmhouse interior, whether youโ€™re looking to refresh your current space with simple accessory updates, or youโ€™re planning on overhauling the whole house.

Monochrome Colour Palette

If weโ€™re starting at the very beginning of our Modern Farmhouse makeover, a black and white colour palette is key.

White walls provide the perfect backdrop to industrial iron and wood, creating a bright, fresh space which feels clean, modern and chic.

For a truly authentic modern farmhouse style, take a leaf out of interior designer, Joanna Gaines‘ (the Queen of farmhouse style in our opinion) book and add shiplap to your walls. Check out this easy to follow shiplap DIY from blogger, Summer of Simple Stylings. (Image credit: Craftberry Bush)

Industrial Lighting

Industrial lighting is having its moment in the spotlight right now and itโ€™s no wonder why.

Combining pipework with wood, exposed Edison bulbs and metal caging, industrial style lighting can really create impact on a room.

Consider pendants over your island, a large hanging chandelier over your dining table or industrial style sconces by your bedside table. (Image credit: Original BTC)

Rustic Wood

As a contrast to the manmade feel of metal work running through the house, natural woods add a rustic element โ€“ softening the whole room but working perfectly together.

Look for pieces of furniture that combine both and add accessories such as wooden crate boxes for storage, wooden bowls and large framed mirrors.

Vintage markets and salvage yards are both great places to pick up rustic coffee tables, desks and side units, and if youโ€™re going for a more traditional farmhouse look, look for pieces like old barrels that could be turned into a stylish side table. (Image credit: House Seven Designs)

Dried Flowers

In a more traditional farmhouse interior, youโ€™d find flowers and plants but itโ€™s nice to see the more modern twist embrace dried flowers and leaves, such as pampas grass and wheat.

It also creates a really soothing addition to the monochrome colour palette, warming it up and adding depth to the space with texture.

Group together in a white vase to create a stylish centrepiece or add large pots of full stem pampas to a corner of the room which needs a little love.

We love places such as Rose & Grey, Homesense and Heals for purchasing dried faux flowers. (Image credit: Raw Sunshine Coast)

Fabrics & Textures

Wondering what fabrics to use in your modern farmhouse interior? Alongside natural textures such as linen and cotton, this is the perfect time to add a subtle splash of pattern and print.

Whether youโ€™ve chosen a worn brown leather sofa, or a more neutral design, adding a series of blue striped cushions against earthy tones such as olive green and taupes creates an interesting focal point in the room.

You could also add texture with a chunky throw and place a neutral rug under the sofa and coffee table to ground the space โ€“ especially if you have wooden floors. We love this knit effect rug from La Redoute which works perfectly in grounding the sofa, but doesnโ€™t overpower the style of the room. (Image Credit: Studio McGee)

Are you a fan of a modern farmhouse interior style? If so, which elements above would you look to implement first? For us, updating the house with dried flowers and some more rustic inspired accessories could make such a difference.
