3 Colour Combinations For New Build White
Moving in a new build can feel like a dream. Every surface is sparkling, you don’t need to clean the previous owners rubbish away, and there are no dreaded DIY to replace and put right.
But the issue many people find with new builds is you’ll often have to wait for the drying out process to be complete until you’re able to paint or wallpaper – meaning you could be living with a blank canvas for up to a year.
So instead of waiting in limbo for twelve months, we thought we’d share three colour combinations that work perfectly with white walls, and hopefully inspiring you if you’re looking to furnish your new build property.
Monochrome
Black & White is a classic colour combination! Monochrome can look both striking and serene, depending on which colour you put the most emphasis on.
For example, a large black sofa with graphic print cushions, dark window dressings and a large black statement fireplace will have more of a striking visual impact than a Scandinavian inspired room, with minimal accessories and a light, airy feel.
Speaking of Scandinavian, this style of interior design can be the perfect starting point if you’re looking for monochrome inspiration. We’ve seen the whole paired back Scandi style take a much warmer approach over the last couple of seasons, which has been achieved by adding an abundance of texture such as sheepskin rugs, chunky knit throws, mohair cushions, natural woods in furniture and soft drapes.

Neutrals
An effortless but stylish colour combination for white walls are a series of neutrals to create a warm, Californian coastal vibe. Although a white sofa is perhaps not the most family-friendly, you could perhaps invest in a light grey design, complemented by natural coloured jute, cotton and linen cushions.
Light ash furniture works well in this style of interior, while large rugs, such a rectangle Turkish rug under the coffee table, and a round woven rug by the dining table, creates visual “zones” within an open-plan new build.
The key to stopping the room appearing too sparse is to add plenty of texture and not just in the form of soft furnishings – think wooden bowls, coffee table books, white flowers, textured vases, decorative objects. We love this guide to styling your shelves by Coco’s Tea Party.

Bright & Bold
If you’re really looking to make a statement, adding injections of bold and bright colours through furniture, accessories and soft furnishings, has the ability to turn a blank canvas into an art gallery.
A pop of colour in a sofa against white walls can look amazing, but if you’re not brave enough to take that step just yet, investing in cushions and rugs means that you can change them when needed for a relatively inexpensive outlay.
Stark white walls provide the perfect backdrop to and if you’re looking to add colour through an occasional chair, consider turning the space into a reading nook with a side table and overhead floor lamp. Your house can be the house that friends remember because of your yellow armchair, right?
Finally, changing your curtains and embracing print and colour can add interest to the wall without getting the paint brushes out.
