11 Interior Design Trends 2022: What’s happening in interior design?
2022 is just around the corner, and in the interior industry it’s time to start thinking about what interior design trends are coming our way.
What are the latest trends in home interior design?
The keyword for this upcoming year in home decor is ‘simplicity’ and a definite feel for creating a more calming atmosphere. Neutral tones, multiple functions, contemporary lines, round shapes, gentle curves, are all things we’re going to be hearing about in home decor this year, perhaps not all in the same room at the same time!
Let’s take a look at a few elements for how you can stay ahead of the curve by looking out for these interior trends that are going to be popular in the design world and grab some useful links to help you explore the home decor trends further.
1 – Minimalism
Minimalist design has been a major decorating trend in the past couple of years, and it’s still going strong.
Minimalism will soon become more than just simple decor; it’s expected to become a lifestyle. Minimalism is about removing distractions and focusing on what’s truly important- such as family, friends, and experiences.
One key thing to think about when creating a minimalist interior decor scheme is to make sure it’s not too stark. We’re not suggesting anything close to the stereotypical white on white interior, but instead opting for colours like black or grey to help break up the space.
That said, there are some people who really love the stark look! So if that’s your style vibe, go for it. Add some indoor plants or accessories to help soften the interior, add interest and make it feel more like home.
Texture is also really important in minimalist design. Try using a variety of natural hues and materials like wood, metal, fabric, glass and organic materials and decorative elements to create visual interest. You can even experiment with different textures of the same material to add more depth.
And finally, don’t be afraid to use negative space. It can be really effective and will help to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. By using these tips, you’ll be able to achieve a minimalist interior that’s perfect for your home.
How to create the minimalist style at home
1. Remove all the unnecessary clutter from your home – this includes old clothes, shoes, and books
2. Create a designated space for things like mail and keys so you can always find them
3. Use furniture to create an open area in your living room – try placing a rug on the floor or adding some plants
4. add pops of colour with decorative pieces such as cushions or artwork, keep it simple.
5. Keep only what you love and use regularly in your house – this will help declutter it by reducing excess items that are just taking up space
7. When it comes to decorating your house, stick to neutral hues since they’re easier to match with others.
As we move away from minimalist spaces, we’ll see a greater focus on natural materials, bring nature indoors with the next interior design trends 2022
The Natural + Living World
The natural and living world are major interior design trends 2022 and probably for the next several years, with many different parts from natural materials, sustainable design, biophilic design, and nature-inspired colours like green being all the ‘rage’, or maybe more accurately all the ‘peace, calm and tranquillity. Don’t we all need a little more of that? One of those interior trends that I hope never goes out of style.
2- Natural Materials + Sustainable Interiors
This trend is already starting to take off, with many people using more reclaimed woods, stone, and other earthy tones and elements of the natural world in their homes.
One of the reasons for this shift is the growing popularity of eco-friendly design. More and more people are looking to reduce their environmental impact, and using natural eco-friendly materials and sustainable options are ways to do that.
Wooden floors, walls, and furniture items have been popular for a while now, and this trend is only going to continue in 2022. In fact, we may see more use of stone and other earthy materials.
Sustainable interior design trends isn’t just about making your home more eco-friendly; it can also be about making it more comfortable and inviting.
By using organic materials, natural elements and combined with modern technology like LED lighting, you can create an interior space that’s both stylish and sustainable with a greener approach.
3 – Colour Green
Green is the colour of growth, and so it makes perfect sense that it would be a popular choice for interior design in 2022. Green is often associated with feelings of health and vitality, making it a great choice for spaces that need to feel fresh and new.

In addition to the heightened trend for green interiors in 2022, green colour has led to growing In biophilic design is all about bringing nature indoors and creating living spaces that are inspired by the natural world. This trend has been growing in popularity in recent years, and it’s likely to continue in 2022. and nature designs in homes and apartments. In either an aesthetic design or a decorative piece with an art theme or an interior theme nature brings in physical vegetation.
In Biophilic design is all about bringing nature indoors and creating living spaces that are inspired by the natural world. This trend has been growing in popularity in recent years, and it’s likely to continue in 2022.
There are a number of reasons why biophilic design is so popular. For one, it can help to improve our mental health and well-being. Being surrounded by plants and other natural elements can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation.
In addition, biophilic design is also great for promoting productivity. Studies have shown that being in a space that’s inspired by nature can help to boost creativity and productivity.
5 – Home Office Interior Design Trends
Well, this is an obvious one given the last few years! Working from home becoming more and more popular, and in 2022 we can expect to see even more people working from their homes as we all adjust to the new life as we know it in a post-pandemic world.
There are many different ways to create great home offices. You can also choose between a traditional office setup or something more informal and relaxed.
Whichever route you go, make sure to focus on creating a space that’s comfortable and functional. Make use of natural light, add plenty of storage, and choose furniture that’s both stylish and functional.
Getting A Home Office Right
1. Set up a desk with the right ergonomics
2. Add some style to your office by adding plants, artwork, and other decorations
3. Consider getting a standing desk so you can alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day for better health
4. Keep track of time spent working so you know how much work you are doing each day
5. Create an area in your home where you can take breaks from work – whether it be reading materials, TV shows, or games
6 – Multifunctional Spaces
A trend that is already starting to occur and will continue in 2022 is the use of multifunctional spaces (hello home office, dining table and study hall). These are living rooms and dining rooms that include work areas or even just an office space that can be used for more than one task. This functions as an interior design trend because these spaces are more efficient and productive.
By opting for multifunctional spaces, you can do away with dedicated rooms; this saves time and money when it comes to renovations. Multifunctional spaces are also great for smaller spaces or apartments where every inch of space needs to be used wisely.
When creating a multifunctional, it’s important to think about the different tasks that will be taking place in that space. Make sure that each area is optimised for a specific activity and that there is enough room for all the tools and equipment that you will need. Think about natural lighting, storage space, and furniture design.
1. Consider your home office space to be a multifunctional workspace – use it for studying, working on projects and more
2. Create a comfortable environment by adding chairs or sofas to work in different positions
3. Add some plants and flowers to the room to create a fresh and inviting atmosphere
4. Use decorative items such as vases, bookshelves, paintings and candles that will make you feel at ease while you work
5. Let natural light into the room with windows or skylights; this will help keep you energized throughout the day
6. Add an accent wall of your favourite colour for extra character
7 – Polka Dot
Yep, you read that right. Polka dots are making a comeback, there is now an entire spectrum of colours and styles to choose from.
To use polka dot designs within your living space, start by picking one or two main colours and then use different sizes and shades of those colours to create the dots. You can either go with a uniform look or mix things up for a more playful feel. All that said, it’s motif and style that looks striking in a black + white monochrome palette.
The rule of thumb is the fewer dots and lines, the more subtle it will be. If you want a bold design, go all out with lots of different sized polka dots and bright colours to bring in some energy!
8 – Wabi Sabi
This home decor trend is all about embracing the imperfections in life and interior design. It’s a Japanese concept that encourages people to appreciate the beauty in simplicity and nature.
In interior design, wabi sabi can be seen in rustic or minimalist designs, with an emphasis on natural materials and simple, unfussy shapes.
It’s not about minimalism for the sake of it, but rather letting your interior design reflect who you are and what matters to you in life.
How to create the wabi sabi style
1. Use natural materials such as wood, stone, and clay to create a sense of warmth
2. Add plants in your home for a more organic feel
3. Create an area in your home that is only used for relaxing or sleeping – this will help you to stay focused when working on other tasks
4. Keep the natural hues in one room neutral so it blends with the rest of the house
5. Don’t be afraid to add some dirt into your interior design – use something like concrete or plaster walls to add texture and depth
6. Think about how you want to live before renovating – do you want a minimalist space with few distractions from technology, or would you prefer a more cluttered environment where family photos are displayed proudly on shelves and tables.
9 – Hexagon Design Pattern
Hexagons have been around forever (and we’re not just talking about geometry), but they’ve seen a huge rise in popularity in interior design over the last few years.
This is likely due to their versatility – hexagons can be used as a standalone pattern or combined with other shapes for a more complex design. They also work well in both traditional and contemporary interior designs.
When using hexagons in your living spaces, remember that less is more. If you’re using hexagons as a pattern, just pick one colour and let the design do all of the talking. If it’s used as an interior decoration or accessory (think wall hangings), then choose complementary colours that work well together to create a bolder look.
10- Hand Painted Artwork
Let your interior design do the talking with interior paintings. Hand-painted artwork is all about standing out, and it’s a great way to add instant personality to your home.
If you’re looking for inspiration, then look no further than interior designer extraordinaire Kelly Hoppen. Her work is modern yet luxurious, combining bold colours with clean lines in a way that’s truly unique.
When it comes to interior paintings, one size doesn’t fit all. The beauty of handmade artwork is that they can be customised and personalised to perfectly suit your interior design scheme and the interior space you’re working with.
I enjoy discovering new Instagram accounts and recently came across Lyndele Fozard Art, who creates gorgeous affordable abstract commissions. You can check out her Instagram account here.

11 – Animal Print Designs
Going strong since 2015 (yes, that long ago!), home decor trends for interior animal print designs are here to stay. More specifically, leopard and zebra prints have been big news for a while now, with faux fur rugs, in particular, proving incredibly popular recently.
The key is to look out for smaller details such as cushions and accessories rather than huge floor coverings or headboards.
When using animal prints in your home, it’s important to keep the overall scheme simple. A few well-placed accessories will do the trick, and you don’t need to go overboard with different patterns and colours. Again, less is more!
How To Include Animal Prints In Your Home
1. Animal print is an easy way to add some fun and excitement into your home
2. The patterns are bold, yet subtle enough that they can be incorporated in any room of the house
3. It’s an inexpensive way to make a big impact on your home without breaking the bank
4. There are so many different animal prints out there – you’re sure to find one that suits your interior decor style
5. Try adding zebra stripes, leopard spots, or cheetah fur textures to furniture pieces like cushions, blankets, curtains, rugs and more!
