Farrow and Ball Hague Blue - How to Use This Striking Colour in Your Home

Hague Blue no 30 adds depth to walls, doors and furniture. It's magic in a tin!

The ultimate colour to beat the blues

Farrow and Ball are famous for their outstanding water-based, child-safe paint and stunning wallpaper designs. One of the more commonly used colours in the Farrow and Ball paint collection is Hague Blue. This gorgeous shade of paint truly is the perfect colour. It's soothing and uplifting at the same time, it's dramatic and calm.

The eye-catching deep tones of the paint colour Hague Blue no 30 create a cosy ambience in any space.

Hague Blue takes its name from the beautifully coloured woodwork much used by the Dutch. They often paired blue and white for a unique look that designers and artists are always attempting to replicate.

When decorating your home's interior, this dark colour might seem overwhelming, especially if you are painting a small room, but you can successfully incorporate dark colours like Hague Blue when you have the right tools.

So if you're ready to add a touch of sophistication to your space with this deep blue hue, keep reading, and stick around until the end of this post for all the details on how to save 10% on all your Farrow + Ball purchases.

What we're covering in this post:

  • What colour is Farrow + Ball Hague Blue?
  • Which rooms can I paint Hague Blue?
  • What colours complement Hague Blue?
  • 8 Examples of beautiful Farrow Ball Hague Blue Rooms
  • 5 popular Farrow and Ball paint colours
  • How to save 10% on all your Farrow and Ball purchases

What colour is Farrow and Ball Hague Blue no 30?

Farrow and Ball Hague Blue no 30 is a deep navy blue. Hague Blue is a deep navy colour with hints of green. It is a dark colour that has a beautiful richness to it due to its green undertones.

It can be used to create dramatic schemes, and pairs beautifully with warmer neutrals like cream, beige and gold to create a warm and inviting scheme. Farrow and Ball Hague blue is the perfect colour for creating a cosy and cocooning feel in your home.

When choosing paint colours, it's important to consider the undertone

Let's talk technical, a paint colour is a combination of colours (the only pure colours being red, yellow + blue....Oh and white I know it's not a colour for any purists, but it is a pigment)

A colour is a combination of overtone (Hauge Blue: blue) and undertone (Hague Blue: green). So if you want colour cohesion in your home, adding this blue to a warmer scheme might not give you the look you would like and it may feel a little off combined with warmer colours.

The opposite is true for cohesion in cooler schemes, and a perfect colour for creating a calming and relaxing atmosphere in your home.

Which rooms can I paint Hague Blue?

Honestly, this captivating colour can be used in any room of your home. What? Even a small dark room? Yep. If you're tired of looking at white or grey walls and are looking to add a touch of elegance to your space, Hague Blue is the ideal colour to do just that. Adding deep colours to small spaces creates a sense of drama and cocooning cosiness.

Most people use deeper paint colours like Hague blue in their living room as it offers a dramatic and inviting feel. Deep dark colours add such a cocooning cosiness! Of course, it's absolutely fab in a bedroom, entrance, bathroom or home office.

Can I use Farrow Ball Hague blue in my kitchen?

Hague blue can also be used in kitchens. Try painting one wall in Hague blue and the other walls in white or a light grey such as Ammonite or Cornforth White. Consider Hague Blue on a kitchen island with white cabinets adding in some contrast and a refined sophisticated feel.

If you have panelling, try painting the lower half of the walls in Farrow Ball Hague blue and the upper half in a Farrow Ball All White or Wimborne White. This will help to brighten up the space and make it feel more open.

What colour complements Hague Blue?

Where shall we start? So many colours look fabulous with Hague Blue.

Pair it with a pale, pretty colour

When it comes to complementary colours, Hague blue looks great when paired with pale pink and yellow too. For a soft and feminine look, try pairing it with shades of pink like Pink Ground or Setting Plaster. It's perfect for a nursery and is child safe and eco-friendly, like all water-based Farrow Ball paints.

Go green and earthy

For a more earthy and natural vibe, try using Hague Blue as an accent colour, pairing it with green tones like Cooking Apple Green or Green Blue.

Make a statement from the floor up

The deep, dark tones of this paint colour pop against lighter paint colours or white skirtings, for a room that makes a statement. If you're looking for creative painting techniques be sure to check out our ultimate guide to painting your living room.

What is the difference between Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion and Modern Emulsion?

That's a great question.

Let's look at Estate Emulsion...

This is Farrow and Ball's most popular paint. It provides a flat, chalky finish. This paint is designed for rooms that have very little traffic and moisture. Estate Emulsion is highly recommended when painting bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms.

Note that the flatter and chalkier the finish, the less durable the paint will be. Keep that in mind when preparing for your next painting project.

Let's look at Modern Emulsion...

Modern emulsion has a sheen level of 7%. It is still classified as a matt finish but that little bit of sheen makes it more durable and easier to clean compared to Estate Emulsion.

This paint is ideal for high-traffic areas that have more moisture such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Farrow and Ball Hague Blue: Final Thoughts

Farrow Ball Hague Blue can be used in every room in your home. Experiment with this popular shade to create a contemporary workspace, calming bedroom or glamorous kitchen.
