The Ultimate Guide to Little Greene Paint Company

It can be so frustrating trying to pick the right paint brand, can't it? What are the differences?

Should I use Farrow & Ball, Dulux, Valspar, Little Greene Paint Company, Craig + Rose and so many more. What's the paint quality like? Will it cover well? Is it all the same? Wondering if you're paying more for no additional benefit, it is really worth the extra money?

And that's before we've even got to the question of the actual colours choices... Standing there for what feels like hours, looking at swatches and trying to imagine how the colour will look in your home.

I've learned a thing or two about paint since I started as an interior designer over a decade ago, it would be fair to say not all paints are created equal. But it is a debate that brings about a lot of design snobbery!

After a lot of trials, my favourite paint brand by far is the Little Greene Paint Company - a brand that is all about making the process of painting your home easier, and helping you to find the perfect paint colour for your space.

With an extensive range of colours available (not just those that you see on the Little Greene colour chart, more on that below), as well as different finishes and textures, there really is something for everyone with this independent British paint brand.

In this article, we will take a look at everything you need to know about Little Greene Paint Company, including its history, its products, its colour chart, and find out if it's worth the investment?

The Little Greene Paint Company History

The Little Greene Paint Company was founded in the 1940s by two painters who were looking for better quality paint. The independent British paint company is known for their high-quality, long-lasting paints, which come in a wide range of colours to suit any home and decorating style.

An eco-friendly, family-run business cataloguing 300 years of paint and wallpaper.

What colours are available from Little Greene Paint?

Little Greene paint colours cover every shade imaginable, from bright and bold to subtle and muted.

One common untrue objection I hear is that designer paints have limited colour choices. Although it’s not widely known, a visit to a Little Greene stockist, such as my favourite interiors showroom in Nottingham, William Robinson interiors, you’d find Little Greene’s extensive colour collection of around 2000 premixed colours to choose from.

What are the most popular Little Greene paint colours?

The queen of the Little Greene Paint colour collection has to go to French Grey. Other popular colours are Hicks Blue, Slaked Lime and Aquamarine. Let's not also forget my go-to neutral white Shirting and Loft White should always get a mention.

What are the Little Greene Paint Colour Scales?

The colour scales have been designed for ease of use, each colour is one of a graduated family, grouped in columns according to undertone.

The card combines some of the best-loved colours from the Little Greene ‘Colours of England’ card with lighter or darker tones of each. The result is a delightfully soft palette that offers subtle variations of shade and an incredibly easy-to-use system for harmonising and combining colours in a room.

In addition, their colour palette is constantly expanding with new collections the Grey, Stone, Green + Colour Scale Collection so you're sure to find the perfect shade for your project.

Is Little Greene paint durable?

Yes, Little Greene Paint is very hard-wearing. The water-based paints are designed to withstand the rigours of daily life. In addition, their oil-based paints are also very hard-wearing.

If you need an extra durable finish opt for the ‘Intelligent' finishes which are 15x more durable than ordinary paints, produced to resist the wear and tear of the modern family home.

Should there be any accidents, the ‘Intelligent’ paints are washable, providing the perfect finish for high traffic rooms in the house such as hallways and landings.

Are Little Greene paints worth the investment?

This is a question that many homeowners may ask themselves, and the answer is yes – Little Greene Paint is definitely worth your investment.

Not only are their paints known for being high quality and long-lasting, they contain 4 x more pigment than standard paints and higher quality more durable materials, but they also come in a wide range of colours to suit any style of home. Whether you’re looking for a bright, bold colour or something more subtle and muted, Little Greene has you covered.

If you'd like to understand more about the differences in paint, have a read of this article Are designer paints worth it? Most people think designer paints are expensive, that is until you find out there isn't really even a price difference!

Does B&Q stock Little Greene paint?

No, B & Q do not stock Little Greene Paint Company paints.

Rather than going directly to Little Greene Paint Company, I like to support independent retailers. My favourite place to head is William Robinson Interiors, established in 1882. Still run by William today there isn't much he doesn't know about paint (and he's thoroughly lovely too).

Head here to grab your Little Greene colour chart. In a bid to support independent retailers, orders from the retailer are given priority over orders placed directly and shipped prior to orders placed directly, often next day delivery (rather than 5-7 days if you head directly to Little Greene).

  • Completing a renovation project, get the phases and lowdown below! 👇
A schedule of work is a plan that outlines the order in which tasks will be completed.
You can use the schedule of works to further understand the scope of the project and obtain more detailed quotations to firm up your costs.
This can help you avoid costly mistakes, like not having the right trades scheduled at the right time, or having to redo work because of adjustments and changes, it will ensure that your renovation project stays on track.
Some of the most important tasks that should be included in your schedule of works are as follows:
Demolition, Strip Out + Removal: This includes removing old materials, fixtures, and appliances from the home, demolishing structures and clearing the site. Aka the point of no return.
✅ Structural Construction: erecting new structures, and structural work.
✅ Weathertight: All works related to ensuring the building is protected from the elements. Walls, windows, doors, roof etc.
✅ First Fix: All electrical, plumbing, heating + joinery work prior to "floor to ceilings".
✅ Floor to Ceilings: Plastering and flooring finishes.
✅ Second Fix: All electrical, plumbing, heating + joinery work after "floor to ceilings".
✅ Finishes + Decoration: The fun part, the bit you actually see and live with, and more often than not the area that gets sacrificed.
✅ Cleaning: A builder's clean is a thing of beauty!
✅ Landscaping: The final part of the renovation, the exterior!
