Bathroom Lighting IP Ratings // Creative Lighting Lowdown

When it comes to designing and installing lighting in a bathroom, safety is a top priority. With water being such a key feature in a bathroom, it’s important to ensure that all electrical fittings are suitable for use in a damp environment and that the bathroom lighting IP rating is carefully considered.

I know you have dreams of chandeliers dangling over rolltop baths, but considering bathroom lighting IP ratings and bathroom lighting zones is essential, sorry if this bursts your blissful bathroom bubble.

In the UK, bathrooms are divided into different zones based on their proximity to water sources. Each zone has specific requirements for the type of lighting that can be installed, and it’s essential to adhere to these guidelines to ensure the safety of those using the space.

Bathroom Lighting IP Ratings Explained // Bathroom Zones

What are the different zones in a bathroom?

Before we dive into the specific requirements for zones for bathroom lighting let’s take a closer look at the different areas that make up a bathroom.

Zone 0: The area inside the bath or shower itself. This zone requires fittings that can withstand complete immersion in water.

Zone 1: The area above the bath or shower, up to a height of 2.25 meters. This zone requires fittings that can withstand water splashes.

Zone 2: The area surrounding Zone 1, extending 60cm horizontally and 2.25m vertically from the edge of the bath or shower. This zone requires fittings that can withstand water splashes from any direction.

Outside of these zones, there are no specific requirements for IP ratings, but it’s still important to choose a fitting that is suitable for a damp environment.

Bathroom Lighting IP Ratings Explained // IP ratings

What is an IP rating?

An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, is a system that indicates how well a fitting is protected against different types of foreign objects and moisture. The first digit in an IP rating indicates the level of protection against solid objects, while the second digit indicates the level of protection against moisture.

For example, a fitting with an IP rating of IP44 is protected against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashes from any direction.

What IP rating should a bathroom light be? Bathroom lighting IP ratings explained.

Okay, so you’ve got all the questions! What IP rating should a bathroom light be? Do I need IP44 or IP65 for a bathroom? Do all bathroom lights need to be IP44? Let’s get you some answers!

Zone 0: As this zone requires fittings that can withstand complete immersion in water, the minimum IP rating is IP67. This means the fitting is completely waterproof and can be immersed in water without any risk of electrical danger. It’s important to note that fittings in this zone should be low voltage and installed by a qualified electrician.

Zone 1: Fittings Zone 1 requires a minimum IP rating of IP45 is required but it’s generally accepted that IP65 is used. This includes fittings installed directly above a bath or shower 2.25 meters from the floor level.

Zone 2: In Zone 2, the minimum IP rating required is IP44, which means the fitting is protected against water splashes from any direction.

Outside of the zones: While there are no specific IP rating requirements for fittings outside of the three zones, it’s still a good idea to choose a fitting that is suitable for use in a damp environment, a fitting that has 18 fabric shades might not be the best investment for longevity. Look for fittings that are specifically designed for use in bathrooms, as these will have additional protection against moisture.

What are the different types of fittings available? There are many different types of light fittings available for use in a bathroom. Here are a few examples:

Ceiling fittings: Ceiling fittings are a popular choice for Zone 2 as they can provide a good level of overall lighting for the space. These fittings can be flush or semi-flush, depending on the height of the ceiling.

Downlights: Downlights are a great option for Zone 1 as they can be installed directly above a bath or shower. These fittings can provide a good level of task lighting for the space.

Wall lights can be used in any zone, but they are particularly popular in Zone 2 as they can provide a good level of ambient lighting for the space. Wall lights can be installed vertically or horizontally, and there are many different styles and designs available to suit any bathroom décor.

LED strip lighting: LED strip lighting is a great option for adding a decorative touch to a bathroom. This type of fitting can be installed under cabinets or along the edges of a mirror to provide a soft, ambient glow. LED strip lighting can be used in any zone, but it’s important to ensure that the fitting is suitable for use in a damp environment.

When choosing a fitting for a bathroom, there are several factors to consider:

  • IP rating: As we’ve already discussed, the IP rating is a crucial consideration when choosing a fitting for a bathroom. Make sure you choose a fitting with the appropriate IP rating for the zone in which it will be installed.
  • Style: There are many different styles of fittings available, so choose one that suits your bathroom décor. Consider the type of lighting you need – do you want a fitting that provides task lighting, ambient lighting, or both?
  • Efficiency: Choose a fitting that is energy efficient to save on your electricity bill. LED fittings are a great option as they use less energy than traditional fittings and have a longer lifespan.
  • Installation: It’s important to have any electrical fitting installed by a qualified electrician. Make sure you choose a fitting that is easy to install and can be safely wired into your bathroom’s electrical system.
