7 Affordable Rental Decorating Ideas for a Beautiful Home

Are you tired of living in a rental property that doesn’t feel like home? It’s time to transform your space with some affordable rental decorating ideas!

From temporary flooring to DIY furniture, there are plenty of easy and budget-friendly solutions to create a beautiful and personalised living space. Discover how to add colour, texture and personality to your home with these rental decorating tips. Don’t settle for a bland rental property – create a space that reflects your style and makes you feel right at home!

Fortunately, there are many ways of decorating a rental house on a budget that won’t cost a fortune and can be easily reversed when it’s time to move out.

In this blog post, we’ll share some tips and ideas for decorating your rental property that will help you create a stunning and comfortable home that feels like your own.

First up, can you decorate a rental property?

Yes, you can decorate a rented home, but there are certain limitations and considerations to keep in mind. First and foremost, it’s important to read your tenancy agreement to see if there are any restrictions on decorating. Some landlords may not allow tenants to paint or make significant changes to the property, while others may be more flexible.

If your landlord allows decorating, there are plenty of ways to personalise your space without making permanent changes. Consider adding colourful curtains, cushions and throws, or investing in some statement pieces of furniture.

It’s important to keep in mind that while you want to make your rental property feel like home, you’ll need to be able to remove any decorations or changes when it’s time to move out. Avoid making any permanent changes that may affect your security deposit or rental agreement, you don’t want to be losing your deposit! The holy grail? Cheap rental decorating and temporary rental decorating!

1 // Look beyond paint to decorate rental

The most common question I get asked? How to decorate walls in a rental! Painting the walls is one of the most popular ways to personalise a rented property, (and if you do then I adore Little Greene Paint Company) but it’s not always practical or feasible.

Some landlords may not allow tenants to paint the walls, or you may not want to spend money and time on a paint job that you’ll need to reverse when you move out. However, there are alternative ways to add colour and texture to your walls. Here are some rental-friendly alternatives:

  • Removable wallpaper: This is a great option for adding pattern and colour to your walls without committing to paint. Removable wallpaper is easy to install and remove, and there are plenty of options available online.
  • Wall decals: Wall decals are another fun and affordable way to add personality to your walls. They come in a variety of sizes and designs, and they’re easy to apply and remove without damaging the walls.
  • Gallery walls: If you have a collection of art or photos, create a gallery wall to showcase your favourite pieces. You can use removable adhesive strips like command strips or picture-hanging hooks to avoid putting holes in the walls.

2 // Focus on textiles

Textiles are a powerful tool for creating a cosy and welcoming home. From curtains to rugs to cushions, textiles can add colour, texture, and warmth to any room. Here are some rental decorating ideas that focus on textiles and click here for 7 ways to add texture to your home:

  • Curtains: Replace your plain or outdated curtains with colourful or patterned ones to add visual interest to your windows.
  • Rugs: A rug can instantly transform a room and make it feel more inviting. Choose a rug that complements your furniture and adds a pop of colour or pattern to the space.
  • Cushions and throws: Add some cosy accents to your sofa or bed with decorative cushions and throws. These are easy to change seasonally or when you want to update your decor.

3 // DIY your furniture

Furniture is often the most expensive part of decorating a home, but there are ways to save money and make it your own. Instead of buying new furniture, consider DIYing or repurposing what you already have.

Here are some rental decorating ideas for furniture:

  • Paint or stain: If your furniture is outdated or worn, give it a fresh coat of paint or stain. This is a great way to transform the look of your furniture and make it fit your style.
  • Replace hardware: If you have old or plain knobs and handles on your furniture, replace them with new ones to give it a fresh look.
  • Repurpose: Get creative with your furniture by repurposing it for a new use. For example, turn an old dresser into a TV stand or use a bookshelf as a room divider.

4 // Add greenery

Plants are an easy and affordable way to add life and colour to your rental property. They’re also great for improving air quality and reducing stress. Here are some rental decorating ideas for adding greenery:

  • Houseplants: Choose a few houseplants that are easy to care for and complement your decor. Spider plants, pothos, and snake plants are all great options for beginners.
  • Herb garden: Consider starting a herb garden if you have a sunny kitchen window. Not only will it add fresh herbs to your cooking, but it will also add some greenery to your space.
  • Hanging plants: If you’re short on floor space, consider hanging plants from the ceiling or mounting them on the wall. This is a great way to add greenery to a room without taking up any floor space.

5 // Use temporary flooring

If you’re not a fan of your rental property’s flooring, there are temporary solutions that can help you cover up or disguise it. Here are some rental decorating ideas for temporary flooring:

  • Removable vinyl tiles: These tiles are easy to install and can be removed without damaging the underlying floor. They come in a variety of colours and patterns and can be used to create a fun and unique look. Love the collection at Jes Rose.
  • Rugs: A large rug can cover up an unattractive or outdated floor and add some texture and colour to your space. This is a great option for renters who don’t want to invest in a more permanent solution.

6 // Add lighting

Lighting can make a big difference in the look and feel of a room. By adding different sources of light, you can create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Here are some rental decorating ideas for lighting and click here for our must visit shops for affordable lighting.

  • Table lamps: A table lamp can add warmth and personality to your space. Choose a lamp that complements your decor and provides the right amount of light for the room.
  • Floor lamps: A floor lamp can be used to fill a dark corner or highlight a piece of furniture. Choose a lamp that has a unique design to add some interest to the room.
  • String lights: String lights are a fun and affordable way to add some ambience to your space. You can hang them on the wall, wrap them around a plant, or drape them over a piece of furniture.

7 // Rearrange your furniture

Sometimes, all it takes to refresh a room is to rearrange your furniture. By moving things around, you can create a new layout and a new perspective on your space. Here are some rental decorating ideas for rearranging your furniture:

  • Create zones: If you have an open-plan living space, create zones for different activities. For example, use a rug and a set of chairs to create a reading nook, or position your sofa and TV for optimal viewing.
  • Focus on the focal point: Every room should have a focal point, whether it’s a fireplace, a large window, or a piece of art. Arrange your furniture around the focal point to create a sense of balance and harmony in the room.
  • Experiment with angles: Instead of placing your furniture in a traditional layout, try experimenting with different angles. For example, position your sofa diagonally in the room to create a more dynamic and interesting look.
  • Here are some perfect living room layout ideas if you need some inspiration.
